Digital Publications Ahead Of Hardware Capabilities
Digital publications, including magazines and
newspapers, can now be created that is more
interactive and carries richer content than
traditional print editions. The problem is that this
level of interactivity can currently only be
achieved by web browsers. This puts digital
publishing ahead of the hardware market that
produces readers.
At present, there are several ebook readers
available that allow one to download books in
digital format that can be carried anywhere and read
at leisure. These readers all have one thing in
common. All feature black and white text screens
with little or no back lighting. This format is
easier on the eyes and allows for longer battery
life, but limits the richness of the content these
devices can display.
Many are trying to find a way to make such
publications available for devices such as smart
phones. The touch screens featured on these devices
would make accessing content a rewarding experience,
but the screen size could prove to be a problem for
those who want their digital media to be as
aesthetically compelling as printed editions.
Tablet computers are currently being looked at as a
potential format for producing readers capable of
displaying the full, rich content that publishers
are capable of producing. However, at the present
time, digital publications are somewhat held back by
limitations in the hardware they can be featured on.
