Office Cubicles

These are the people that manufacture (create) partially enclosed work spaces; they are also referred to as Office Cubicles and are created by sectioning off areas with partitions (usually about 5 - 6 feet tall). The main purpose for these is the isolation of workers from outside interference within the workspace (like noises and sights). The main idea behind this process is that it gives the worker a lot more privacy in his / her work and in turn allows them to concentrate and get on better with their tasks.

Inside a cubicle you are likely to find a desk (this is sometimes a horizontal surface that has been suspended from the partition, along with this other items can be suspended from the cubicle sides like shelving.

History

The actual word 'Cubicle' came from way back in the 15th century from the Latin word 'Cubiculum' (this actually meant 'Bed Chamber'). Over time this changed from bed chambers to small chambers for study places, partitions that did not reach the ceiling were slowly integrated into these rooms splitting up the space for multiple people and giving them extra privacy).

If you walk into an office that is full of cubicles (usually high tech, large companies) they are often referred to as 'Cube Farms', these are also often found within insurance companies.

Other Uses

There are other things that the work 'Cubicles' can be used for... the other very common thing that someone may refer to as a cubicle as a changing room (these are sometimes referred to as Changing Cubicles).
